In my travels around the country knocking on doors, there are many common themes but discipline is a recurring one. Before Christmas I witnessed a police officer being cheecked by a young lad of no more than 12. During the conversation it became obvious that said lad "knew his rights" and that the officers had no means with which to discipline him and no deterrant to prevent his anti social behaviour from escalating. So you are 12 and you have no regard for law and order. What are you going to learn at school? He is probably a disruptive influence so other children are being dragged down as well. His teachers have no power or control over him either. What happens when he is 14 and 16? Well his respect for authority is not going to improve and he will have no self respect or respect for anyone else. To me discipline is the key, with clear and maybe harsh deterrants. A local police force that has the power to control and prevent low grade offence and an education system where each child knows the perametres and where punishment is metered out to those who break the rules and have no regard for their fellow community members. And who do we help the most...yes that wayward young man because even though his life is hard and he was not born with advantage he will have boundaries within which to grow and maybe even get the education that he needs to make a better life for himself. Call me old fashioned but this country is crying out for some common sense. I will be interested to hear your views?
